“The following problems are old and have supposedly been corrected (e.g., by recall and manufacturing changes) and thus should not affect newly produced X5s. I’m really no authority on what is a current vs. a past problem, so treat the difference between the above list and the list below as just a very rough split.
- Fire (aux. fan problem)
- A small number (3-4?) of X5s caught fire under the hood when an auxilliary fan malfunctioned due to a defect. There was a recall. Many vehicles evidently could have eventually caught fire. This problem affected many other BMW models besides X5s. According to the recall information available from the NHTSA, vehicles produced after 9/2001 should not have this problem. BMW issued more than one recall about this, however, recalling the vehicles that had already supposedly been fixed, so you never know. Here is more info:

My name is Hend Soleib I am a customer of BMW Egypt ( Bavarian Group ) , I am really shocked of BMW as a one of the reputable Auto motors cars world wide and never ever expected that I would face such a horrible accident with BMW that should be one of the best when it comes to SAFETY ISSUES , Thursday July 12th, 2012, I had a big fire in my car 318 (2010 Model VM49882) for unknown reason while my mother 77 years old was in it. what happened that I parked the car in a main famous road and left my mother there waiting for me , for a less than 10 minutes people were screaming that the car is burning , I even have fallen down and crashed my knees and arms while was running to save my mother who hardly was able to get out of the car with the assist of the audience who were there .
I have immediately contacted BMW Ka! tamyia branch – Egypt, who came and dragged the car .
Sir, in addition to the very bad condition my mother and I were in , the unprofessional reaction of the customer care of the Branch Manager ( Eng. Ehab El Dur ) is really unbelievable and not accepted by all means, Mr. El Dur couldn’t wait to check the car on the contrary he started immediately to defend and assure that it is not a technical defect without even having a look to it and also refused to give another one (car) until they are done with the diagnoses which is of course causing me a big loss as my life is totally stuck and can not even go to work.
Sir I am really , depressed and disappointed from BMW and do not think that the case should go like this specially that there are many cases in Egypt had same accidents, however I prefer to wait until I receive your advise

Today my 325i caught on fire while driving to work. It’s unbelievable I never recieved a recall notice about this and I’m lucky to be alive. I can’t believe the numerous other BMW owners who have had the exact same issue as me. My car is totaled.

I HAVE RETAINED AN ATTORNEY, AND HE IS IN THE PROCESS OF GAINING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE SAKE OF A POSSIBLE “CLASS ACTION” LAW SUIT AGAINST BMW AND ALL AFFILIATES. I WILL STAY IN TOUCH AS WE PROGRESS.

Hi. What happened with the class action suit. I have/had a 2004 BMW X5 and it started on fire while parked in my driveway. The more research I do the more problems with BMW’s and X5’s that I see have occurred for a long time.

Omg I was shocked to see that other’s have had their bmw to catch on fire I own a 2004 bmw 3251 and I woke up in the am and it had burned I was lucky enough it didn’t burn to the ground but it started inside the car burned my driver door and my dashboard it was my first car and was paid off it was a complete lost NEVER AGAIN but I would like for someone to keep in touch with me about the law suit to many cars are catching a fire and luxury cars at that they are not cheap

I have an isue where my X5 3.0d burnt to the ground. I had called BMW on call and the technician who was sleeping at the time adviced me and assured it safe to drive the car and that the worst that could happen was the car would cut off. IT burst into flames and BMW did not want to take responsibility they walked away from the issue.
